The art of Malibar Kuntao Silat is the legacy of Bapak Steve Gartin. It was created by him and named by his teacher Willem De Thouars. It is a complete system that combines both Kuntao and Silat into a refined, well rounded curriculum.
Kuntao is the art of the Chinese community who immigrated to Indonesia, these arts are similar to what most people would describe as "Kung Fu". The difference is that the movements are focused on practical application. The art adapted in Indonesia to counter the indigenous Silat arts and lost most of the flashy movements and retained the best techniques for self defence.
Silat is the indigenous art of Indonesia. There are literally hundreds of different styles across south east asia.
The art is know for the effective use of bladed weapons, low stances and dynamic footwork.
There are many legends surrounding the origins of Silat but it would appear that the art evolved as the various people who settled the Indo-Malay archipelago brought there fighting arts with them. The various styles blended together by a process of natural selection to create and art that was more then the sum of it's parts.
The art of Malibar offers students the chance to learn both of these Indonesian styles.
